Poppy Keenor
With the UK population set to reach 72.4 million by 2043 we need to focus on how to densify our cities, towns and villages while respecting their historic character. Along with protecting historic landscapes we also need to look at how we design for the demands of an ever warming climate. My project looks at how individuals can densify towns whilst enhancing their character and providing new or improved housing that is suitable for withstanding the changing climate of our future.
RESPECTING THE CHARACTER OF RYE
Adaptation and development based on enhancing and respecting the existing buildings within the conservation areas of Rye.
See Home Owners Guide to Retrofitting in supporting portfolio document below for further details.
MATERIAL AND DETAIL LANGUAGE
The new development for densifying Rye is based on creating a new language for permitted development. This is approached by growing and adapting the existing back garden buildings, in particular sheds.
The first area I will look into is a new material language. This is for the external envelope of all new developments and is based on the existing character of Rye.
The second area I will look at is introducing architectural details into the design for all new build and retrofits in Rye also based on existing characteristics of the area.
PROPOSAL
Before home owners can take over the building plots there needs to be a council intervention to compulsory purchase the back land of properties and install services for the homeowners to tap into. These will be run up from the south under cliff road in boundary walls. The council will also be responsible for providing the structure up to ground level, this includes the terracing and retaining walls for all plots.
NEW BUILD PROPOSAL
Proposal for new buildings based on the principles of adaptation to existing buildings in Rye.
See Home Owners Guide to Retrofitting in supporting portfolio document below for further details.
