One of the University of Sussex’s architectural highlights is the preservation of the landscape on site. Designed in cooperation with landscape architect Dame Sylvia Crowe, Sir Basil Spence’s initial idea for the Falmer site was focussed on keeping the green fields as intact as possible and incorporating them as part of the beauty of the campus.

The University of Sussex campus is one of the leading examples of the New Universities movement that came at the end of World War II. This 1:2000 scale model represents the major buildings as well as the topography and landscape of the Falmer site, snuggled in-between green hills and forest, a campus where social interaction and ease of access is prioritised.

The Meeting House, as designed by Sir Basil Spence, is a modern religious space, stripped of the traditional shapes and forms and envisioned as a circular community space for everyone on campus. These diagrams show how during all seasons the sunlight piercing through the colour-stained windows on the walls and on the roof is focussed on the altar stage, where the centre of any event will be.
