Design Summary: I was looking at how the elderly can be integrated into society and not feel lonely. I decided to get information as to where they would go to to socialise, a place where they do not feel “shunned” from society. So I decided that I wanted to be able to create a space, environment and atmosphere within Catford that can allow the elderly to become independent as they once were. It would essentially be a town within a town,”Fun Town and NOT Old Town” as a town name was created. Fun Town is a space that the elderly can feel independent, creating different programmes such as a market where they can shop for themselves. A distillery where different alcohol is produced and a bar/pub that sells the products to everyone in Catford and Lewisham.
The site is located on the east side ring of Catford, which is the most important conjunction in the area. It acts as a regional transportation hub, commercial centre, local food retailers, local health centres and placing “Fun Town Not Old Town” in that centre location seemed appropriate so the elderly can feel that they have that link to the rest of society.
The main aspect I envisioned was for my proposal to work hand in hand with areas where the elderly can help create Fun Town, such as with the production of farm plant growing, and by creating a space that heavy goods will be taken care of with gantry cranes and mechanical structures.
