Lucy de Silva Puttick

We started the project by visiting the North Gate in Brighton’s Pavilion Gardens, collecting measurements, analysing interactions, materials, etc. This was then turned into our orthogonal drawings where I digitalised the North Gate and how the public engaged with the building. When we first received our brief, I knew I wanted to design a piece that would be in contrast to the history of the North Gate, whilst still tying in recognisable elements of the structure, such as the colour palette and the repeated use of octagons. With this focus on shapes I tried to mirror in my essence piece by breaking down the form of the gate and recreating it with objects and structures that were the same. I had originally wanted to make a ‘crow’s nest’ of octagons, but this didn’t translate well with the original structure so instead I made an octagonal balcony consisting of separate layers all of which were different sizes.
