Jacob Everett
As a designer, I am interested in graphic design, symbolism and critical design. I believe in the power of design as a tool for lasting societal change. As designers we often forget that we set the precedent for how much of the world works; we design the products and the systems that the modern world runs on. If we believe these systems or these products are exploitative, unethical or bad for society then we must look at ourselves and look at how we can bring the change we want, deserve and need. User privacy is one of the biggest issues facing the modern world and I believe that many tech products and systems can be designed in a way that no longer exploits the user. This is Anonymous by Default.
Anonyous By Default is a campaign that aims to educate the public about the various privacy issues in the modern world and inspire change to the products and services we use. This campaign takes place on social media (Instagram), in public (with posters), Protest Pack (on Dropbox/internet) and through the use of possible future product concepts.
The products you will see are designed to respect user privacy and hand back control of data to the user. Through the use of these products, in conjunction with the other campaign material Anonymous By Default is able to inform the public of the flaws in our current systems, whilst also giving them hope for the future. Change within the design of these systems will only come tomorrow if action is taken today. The products we love don’t have to spy on us.
The overall aim of this project is to show the user how the current system can be changed in favour of a new, fairer system that respects user data. The project aims to show users that there are already people out there who demand this change and that privacy is more important than they may have first thought. This campaign uses inspiring concept technology to open the eyes of the user to a new possible future that is full of hope, respect and freedom for all. Just remember… the products we love don’t have to spy on us. We should all be Anonymous By Default.
