Open Workshop (Main Final Year Submission)

How might we create a framework for the distribution and creation of specialist machinery using 3D printed and readily available parts, that can be made by anyone with access to tools, for use in craft workshops, maker-spaces and even our home.
Open Workshop is a new way to create machinery at home using 3D printed parts and readily available materials from places such as B&Q. It allows expensive machinery to be created inexpensively meaning that a wider range of people can access machines that otherwise would have been difficult or expensive to access.
I have designed 2 mechanisms that allow a drill to be used at the centre of each machine one that can have the speed adjusted and kept there (Adjustable Ratchet shown below) and one that allows for on the fly adjustments.
The final output for the project, as of the hand-in, was the creation of a pottery wheel and a website that details all the parts. Each part and machine has a place to download the files ready for 3D printing and assembly animations.

Other Projects Undertaken This Year
Recycleroo

In researching and talking to baristas it became clear that not all of their waste was recycled because of the cost of the council taking away both the general waste bin and mixed recycling bin. So I have proposed an app that allows customers to pick up waste from coffee shops, either to create a product with it to sell or for the general public to pick up the waste to recycle in their bins at home.
The second part is a proposal for a set of stools that uses the positive and negative cuts to create two custom stools with minimal waste and uses the collected waste to create the tops.
Both of these parts will hopefully spark the council and the government to make it easier for cafes to recycle, when they see someone hacking into their service, saving the cafes money as well as allowing people to create an income.

Chess is More

For the One Sheet brief I created a flat pack minimal chess set for children to learn how to play chess, as well as allowing the wider spread of education and the game of chess. It can be purchased as a completed board, or the DXF can be brought for it to be made in a Fab Lab or, if you have access to a laser cutter, the profits will then go towards the creation of a separate board which will go to a disadvantaged school. Below is a screen shot of the finished board backed up by research.
