As the first round of modules comes to a close for SoAD students in first year, some have been asked to present some of the work produced so far. A challenging start to the year for most as repeated lockdowns meant heavily reduced face to face learning and access to workshops. However, with the support of our course leader and tutors, we have managed to somewhat reproduce a workspace online by using cooperative software such as Teams and Miro. In this way we have all made meaningful progress towards becoming better designers.

Module DP401 focused on the making processes we encounter as designers.

I have highlighted Brief Two in this module: Design a useful structure that can be made using 1.5m of 44×44 pine.

I designed a wall mounted organiser for a guitarist.

Module DP402 focused on Design Methods.

Our final six-week project: Design a tool for a connoisseur.

This project illustrates what we have learned so far, bringing skills from across modules to design tool for a client and produce an advertisement for the product. My connoisseur/client was a veterinary surgeon who works on international charitable projects with organisations such as WVS. Our product, the ACA is an adjustable anchor point used for operation positioning in areas with limited medical infrastructure.
