Joyfulness – Project Thesis
The project is an exploration of the ideas of joyfulness and discovery. It aims to change the Lace House from a residential building into a waiting area for the passengers in Brighton’s Pool Valley Coach Station, allowing people to spend a joyful time while waiting for the bus.
The project combines temporary and permanent structures into the building. The proposed building changes and transforms during certain periods to form different circulations to create the freshness of the playground. The building provides three primary purposes: waiting room, playground and accommodation.
The main feature in this project is the Chidori joint, used in traditional Japanese carpentry. These joints are repeated and stacked up to create different forms. The whole structure blends into one visually ample space. However, the grid box also divides the space into various programmes and functions.
In this project, there are different areas for people to discover the building. The whole building is separated into a functional and pleasure area. In the practical zone, it holds the coach station, waiting room and the storage area. In the pleasure zone, it has the cafe, maze, viewing platform and playground. This area invites visitors to spend time in the building to discover the sectors throughout the Chidori grid.
The grid design system not only blends the structure, but includes the materials, furniture and the pattern inside the building. These elements play a significant role in the discovery of joyfulness – the grid builds into different materials on the floor and the wall, which help to divide different zones. Various pieces of furniture are carefully designed to create harmony with the grid structure. Different patterns in the building can provide privacy or visual effects for people to discover around them.
The grid creates a secure connection with different elements and allows people to explore the site with varying emotions before leaving or arriving at Brighton.
