BSc/BA(Hons) Product Design
BSc/BA(Hons) Product Design
Product Design as a discipline is focussed on creating the products, interactions and experiences of tomorrow. Through the course students are supported to develop a wide range of skills enabling them to research, conceptualise, render, test and communicate their ideas, as well as the skills to work as collaborative creative professionals. The course offers a range of exit awards, including the option of a placement year working in industry which gives students the ‘with professional experience’ title. In addition to the main BSc the course also offers a BA exit award that allows students to define and plan their own project work in their final year. Some students this year will also graduate with Product Design Technologies BSc and Sports Product Design BSc.
A significant part of the course involves students working together in multi-year teaching units we call vertical studios. With the four vertical studios Level 5 (2nd year) and Level 6 final year students work together on common briefs and within a shared domain or approach to design. This year’s studios are:
HCD Studio uses a human centred design approach to create design solutions which address systemic problems;
Distributed Design investigates how distributed models of production could offer more sustainable and socially beneficial products;
Design for Ideology challenges students to explore their own ideological positions and how these inform their practice, subjects and outputs as designers.
All of the studios enable students to pursue their own interests, guided by highly experienced tutors within a collaborative and ambitious environment.
